The RAM EZ-Strap^™ is extremely strong and low cost. The RAM EZ-Strap^™, with RAM-to-RAM SHORT double ball, can be cut to fit tubing, square rails and irregular shapes from 0.5" to 2.58" in diameter. The EZ-Strap^™ will attach to the RAP-SB-238FU, creating a mounting point for your cradle. The overall length of the SHORT arm adapter is 1.43". This mount rotates 180 degrees.

How much load can the ball and socket hold? How do you prevent the ball arm falling out of the socket?

The RAP-SB-187RU is one of RAM's Snap Link products, you just snap the ball into place in the receiver and it provides a secure hold while still allowing for adjustment on either end. The Snap Link products are rated to hold up to .5lbs.
