Overview
The RAM-HOL-UN8B-201U consists of a STANDARD length double socket arm and universal X-Grip®clamping cradle for 7"-8" tablets. The double socket arm is 3.69" in length and will accept all RAM 1" diameter ball bases. The spring loaded X-Grip® cradle expands and contracts, allowing for a perfect custom fit of your 7"-8" tablet. Included are extra easy access grip knobs, located on the back of the cradle for quick release of your tablet. The X-Grip® includes a device tether recommended for outdoor applications. The cradle is compatible with handheld devices that will fit the dimensions listed below. It is important to verify the dimensions of your handheld device with a case/sleeve/skin when determining the overall size.

When you say 7-8 inch tablet is that the width if the tablet? I have a new ipad air it is 7" wide and 9-3/4" tall. In the case. Will this holder work or what do you suggest?
The 7"-8" tablet descriptor generally refers to the height of the tablet, not the width. The RAM-HOL-UN8BU that's included with the RAM-HOL-UN8B-201U will accommodate devices between 2.5" and 5.75" wide.

Will this mount accommodate a Samsung Galaxy A7 Lite with a case (dimensions 8.7 x 5.3 x .64) or would the 9" - 10" be the better fit?
Yes, the RAM-UN8B-201U will accommodate a Galaxy A7 Lite with a case with the dimensions provided. The RAM-HOL-UN9U would be too large, the spring loaded arms would not be able to grab a device with the dimensions you provided.

I noticed my tablet can be rotated back and forth about 15 degrees when it is in the X-Grip. Is that normal?
That type of movement is totally normal for the X-Grip. When being used for less rugged applications the small amount of movement allowed is not an issue, but sometimes when traveling at higher speeds or in bumpy environments it can be. If that is causing problems in your application, it is best to use the safety tether which will prevent that type of movement by creating tension between the phone and backplate.
