Do the screws have a knob on them, or do they use a hex or star wrench? Also, what is the minimum thickness that the clamp will attach to?

No, this version of the glare shield base does not come with knobs on the screws. The one that does come with knobs on the screws is RAM-B-259U. This part has a minimum thickness of .25 inch.
