Overview
Ideal for vehicle windshields, the RAM-B-166-C-UN10U consists of a 3.3" diameter RAM® Twist-Lock™ suction cup base, long length double socket arm, and the popular spring-loaded RAM® X-Grip® large phone holder. The RAM® X-Grip® features an 'X' design that expands and contracts to provide a perfect fit for your device – even if it's in a case. Made of powder-coated, marine-grade aluminum, stainless steel components, and high-strength composite, this large version of the RAM® X-Grip® fits phones ranging from 1.75" to 4.5" in width and keeps your device completely functional and accessible. RAM® ball and socket technology allows for near-infinite adjustability to achieve the ideal viewing angle – while also extending the life of your phone by providing shock and vibration damping. For outdoor applications, the RAM® X-Grip® includes a device tether that is recommended for added security and peace of mind.

What surfaces is this suction cup compatible with?
Suction cups work by creating a vacuum, so they require an extremely smooth surface. If the surface is textured at all air can get in and the suction cup with loose grip. Suction cup mounts work best against windows and highly polished metal surfaces.

Could this be used on a motorcycle or will it possibly fly off?
With the vibration that goes on with the motorcycles I would not suggest this mount. I would say try going through our BUILD-A-MOUNT to see the best options for you.

I noticed my phone can rotate back and forth when it is in the X-Grip. Is that normal?
That type of movement is totally normal for the X-Grip. When being used for less rugged applications the small amount of movement allowed is not an issue, but sometimes when traveling at higher speeds or in bumpy environments it can be. If that is causing problems in your application, it is best to use the safety tether which will prevent that type of movement by creating tension between the phone and backplate.

Will the suction cup hold up to use in a 4x4 on highly corrugated roads or very bumpy roads (context is East Africa)? What would be the best mount to get for this context?
If it only holding a small handheld device like a phone, and as long as the surface is thoroughly cleaned before applying the suction, the single suction should work fine. However you could always bump it up to a dual suction cup base for even more extreme use cases: RAM-B-189B-202U.
