No, this part is designed specifically for the B size 1" ball bases
How can I tell what size ball I have

You will want to lay a ruler over the ball and the sizing are the following:
A = 9/16TH "
B = 1INCH
C= 1.5INCH
D = 2.25 INCH
E= 3.38"

Would a 7/8" Ball fit/work?

It is designed for a 1" ball, a 7/8" ball would not fit properly.
